 Formatting MLA citations

This is the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University - an excellent resource for all your MLA formatting needs.

  Quick MLA Formatting How-To:

1.     1.  Check your margins.  MLA formatting requires 1” margins on top, bottom, and both sides.

 ·         Open a blank document in Microsoft Word.

·         On the top toolbar, click “Page Layout”

·         Click on “margins”

·         Choose 1” and click on that

 2.     You need a header on each page of your paper, including the first page.

·         Click on “Insert”

·         Click on “page number”

·         Choose “Plain 3”

·         Type in your last name in front of the  number – make sure you don’t accidentally erase or delete the number!

·         Close the header by clicking on the red box with the X in it.

 3.    The paper must be double spaced.

·         From the home position, locate the block that says “paragraph”.  There is a little arrow in the lower right hand corner of the block.

·         Click on the little arrow.  A drop down box will appear.

·         In the “Line Spacing” box, choose double.

·         Then, click on the box that says “don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style.” A check mark will appear in the box.

·         Then click “OK”

That’s all that is required.
