about herself, what she would do or not do for love.
C) Read the defkinition of UNDERSTATEMENT on page 1269. Copy the
first sentence. Then tell us what you think is the effect of Millay's Understatement
about love. Does it make you believe in it more or believe in it less?
D) Copy all fourteen lines of Millay's sonnet. Skip Lines? Put a mark (/)

that the writer has chosen to emphasize in the story. How has he exaggerated this
tendency and turned it into science fiction?

ACTION: what happens in a story. PLOT: the action of a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end. CHARACTER: an individual who participates in the action of a literary work. SETTING: the time and place of the action of a short story, novel, play, narrative poem
or narrative nonfiction work. THEME: the central idea or message in a work of literature. TONE: the attitude a writer takes toward a subject. MOOD: the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for a reader CONFLICT: the struggle between opposing forces. CLIMAX: in dramatic or narrative literature, the moment when the interest and emotional intensity
reach their highest point. PROTAGONIST: the central character of a story or play. ANTAGONIST: The character who opposes the main character in a story. DENOTATION: the literal, dictionary meaning of a word. CONNOTATION: the emotional response to a word and the meanings that surround it. PERSONIFICATION: attributing human qualities to a an object, animal or idea. DESCRIPTION: writing that appeals to the senses.
