Macbeth Summary
Act 1
Play starts with witches talking about meeting Macbeth.
Captian retells what happened on battlefield. Macbeth killed MacDonwald by sliting him from "knave to chops" and fixing his head on a spear. Captured Thane of Cawdor. King Duncan heard this story and tells someone to tell Macbeth that he will be the new Thane. Macbeth goes to witches with Banquo. Macbeth is told that he will be king and Thane of Cawdonr (doesn;t know he is yet) and Banquo's decendants will be kings. Banquo does nto buy into this, makes fun of teh witches. Someone comes and tells macbeth that he is Thane of Cawdor so he starts to buy into their story. Banquo tells him that the witches have told him a half truth so that he will believe them. Banquo and Macbeth meet up with Duncan and Duncan announces that he will visit Macbeth's home that night and that Malcolm will become the heir to the throne. Macbeth starts to think about killing Duncan. Macbeth sends a letter to Lady Macbeth explaining everything that has happened. She asks the gods to unsex her and make her more like a man so she will go through with the plot to kill Duncan. Macbeth comes home before Duncan gets there and they talk about the plot. Lady tells Macbeth to "look like the flower but be the serpent under it." Duncan and Banquo arrive at the castle. They commebt that they feel safe and everything seems normal. Lady Macbeth greets Duncan and they prepare for dinner. Later that night Macbeth starts to change his ming about the plan and Lady Macbeth talks him back into it. She asks him if he is a man. Lady Mavbeth and Macbeth firm up the plan to kill Duncan by getting the guards drunk and using their daggers.
Act 2
Banquo and Fleance are talking about how the night is not normal (no stars out). Macbeth comes outside waiting for the signal of a bell toll to tell him to go inside and kill Duncan. He talks to Banquo, asks him if he would be loyal to him and do something for him. Banquo replies if he can still keep a clear conscious. This symbolizes that Banquo knows Macbeth may be up to no good. Banquo leaves. Macbeth starts to think about the murder again and if he should go through with it. Starts to see a dagger leading him to Duncan hears the bell and leaves to kill him. Lady Macbeth is waiting for Macbeth and getting parinoid that he wont do it or he will get caught. Says she would have killed him but he looked like her father. Macbeth enters with bloody hands and carrying the daggers (we never see the killing). Lady Macbeth has to return the daggers and wipe the guards with blood. The blood symbolizes guilt. When she returns there is a knock at the door and they have to leave so no one will catch them. Porter scene 3 ppl at hell's gate. Macduff comes in to wake duncan, finds him dead. Macbeth kills the guards before anyone can ask them questions. Donalbaine and Malcolm decide to leave because they think they will be the next ppl killed. Since they leave people start to question if it was actually them that killed Duncan. Some characters also explain that weird things happened the night before. Macbeth is crowed king (we do not see this it is just mentioned)
Act 3
Macbeth is preparing for a banquet he asks Banquo if he will be there. Banquo is leaving with Fleance but he says he will return. Macbeth then speaks to murderers and asks them to kill Banquo and his son. Lady Macbeth starts to reveal that she is feeling guilty about killing Duncan. Macbeth tells her he feels the same. He does not let her know that he has already begun to plan the next murder. Banquo and Fleance are riding back to the castle and are stopped by the murderers. Banquo is killed but Fleance gets away and is told to seek revenge. At the banquet Macbeth is talking to his guests. He is asked to sit but when he looks at the spot he sees Banquo's ghost. He talks to it and asks it to do 2 things. Lady Macbeth tries to explain that this is a sickness he has had since he was a child. Again she asks him if he is a man. Macbeth continues to talk to the ghost and it finally goes away. Lady macbeth asks the guests to leave. The witches meet up together and Hectate joins them. She is angry and plans to get a liquid drop from the moon to put in a potion for Macbeth. This will make him have visions and become overconfident which will lead to his downfall. Lennox and another lord have a chat about their suspicions of Macbeth. They also talk about how Macduff has left to England and that he refused to return when Macbeth sent for him.
Act 4
Macbeth meets up with the witches and sees the three apparitions. He also sees Banquo's decendants as kings. Macbeth has Macduff's family killed. Malcolm and Macduff talk about Scotland. Malcolm is worried that Macduff is there for Macbeth at first but soon realizes that he is not and tells Macduff about the army he is preparing. Ross enters and tells Macduff his family is dead. Malcolm tells Macduff to dispute it like a man and turn his anger into rage to get back at Macbeth.
Act 5
Lady Macbeth is starting to sleepwalk due to the guilt she feels. She reveals that she helped kill Duncan and continues to try to wash her hands. The Doctor is unable to do anything for her. The Scottish army and English meet up at Burnam woods. Macbeth feels that he is invincible and is not worried about the battle that is about to take place. The army decides to cut down tree brances and walk with them to Macbeth's castle. At the castle Macbeth is told that the woods is moving toward the castle and he prepares for battle. The queen dies and Macbeth does not really react to this news. Macbeth battles Young Siward and kills him. Then he faces Macduff.
