Making the team
We do not have tryouts but we do conduct spring and summer practices which are open to incoming freshmen and 8th graders who are considering DeSales as an option.
Practice
Practices during the season are Monday and Tuesday nights 7:30-8:30 and Thursday nights from 9-10. All practices are at the Easton Chiller. We play 2-3 games per weekend (Friday-Sunday) for a total of approximately 35 games per season. The season goes from November until late February, early March.
Incoming Freshmen Activities
All of the team’s off-season practices are open to 7th and 8th graders who are interested in attending St. Francis DeSales High School as Freshmen. These practices are conducted in the summer usually in June and July. There are also numerous opportunities for our incoming freshmen and their families to get involved with the team prior to the start of the school year. The team has a 3-3 spring league team, a 5-5 summer league team, two one-week summer training camps, and numerous off-ice team building activities such as a canoe trip, a paintball outing, family picnic, as well as many other events. Currently we only field a varsity program.
2011-12 Season
The 2011-12 season was the most successful in the brief history of the St. Francis DeSales hockey program. The team enjoyed many “firsts” such as the first 20 win season, qualifying for the Blue Jackets Cup for the first time, winning the Capital Hockey Conference Blue Division with 19 points and having it’s first 50 goal scorer – Junior Joseph Gray.
In addition to the team accomplishments, DeSales players received numerous post season awards. Four players earned CHC All League honors as Senior Tyler McClary, Junior Joseph Gray and Sophomores Tyler Klutch and Ben Risinger were selected to the First Team Blue Division. Tyler McClary was also selected to play in the Ohio State Senior All-Star Game and was the DeSales recipient of the Hobey Baker award. The Stallions were equally successful in the classroom as six players made the CHC All-Academic Team. First Team honors (3.75 GPA or better) went to Senior Nigel Mathias, Sophomore Danny Helin and Freshman Tyler Barrett. Second Team members (3.50 to 3.74 GPA) were Senior Chad Janszen and Sophomores Josh Van Cuyk and Kyle Ghiloni.
The 2012-13 season promises to be equally exciting as the Stallions return 12 varsity lettermen, including 6 of the 7 leading scorers. They will be joined by a talented group of incoming freshmen which should allow the team to continue it’s success.
